25 Mar How Sweet it is… the Wedding that Inspired a Business!
When Amy and Sean tied the knot at The Bowdon Rooms last year they didn’t realise that their own wedding would inspire a successful new business!
Seven months on from their big day, we caught up with Amy and Sean to chat about their wedding and find out how their own bespoke wedding ideas prompted Amy to start her own event-focused sweet cart and decor hire company called How Sweet It Is. Photography of Amy and Sean’s wedding was captured by Leah Lombardi.
“We initially found out about The Bowdon Rooms by doing a Google search,” explained Amy “we live in Stretford, so we didn’t actually know about The Bowdon Rooms until we found it online. We were looking for a nice venue that was local but that wasn’t a hotel. We looked at four or five other venues but we hadn’t found anything similar to The Bowdon Rooms.”
“I knew it was the right venue straight away as soon as we visited.” added Sean, “It was ideal for what we wanted and it had loads of potential for us to do our own thing. The big difference for me, was that Karen the Wedding Planner wasn’t trying to sell us anything. She was really friendly and quick to tell us that their team could help us do whatever we wanted on the day. We actually booked it first thing in the morning the day after we visited.”
Wanting a wedding that was completely personalised to their tastes, Amy took the lead on the design, styling and decoration for the day. “I lived wedding planning for eighteen months before we got married!” Amy told us, “Using Pinterest and researching wedding ideas actually inspired me to make my own decorations, so most of the things on the day, like our floral table centrepieces and table plan, were made by myself and my sister-in-law.”
Amy took her wedding decor inspiration one step further after the big day by purchasing a Ferris Wheel Sweet Cart and starting her own event and wedding decor hire company with her sister-in-law Carly, called How Sweet It Is.
“On our wedding day we actually created a display of sweets and chocolates but quite a few of our guests didn’t notice it. We had loads of leftover sweets and it made me realise how great it would have been to have a vintage sweet cart. So, we decided to buy one and now we have our own business renting out the Ferris Wheel Sweet Cart for events and weddings. We’ve also branched out into the rental of vintage tea sets with lovely cups, tea pots and tea stands! It’s proved really popular for weddings and birthday parties. The sweet cart looks so lovely all decorated with fairy lights, chocolate stands and bunting.”

Amy’s pre-loved and re-designed wedding dress was another element that really added the personal touch to their day. “I had a really lovely experience with my wedding dress.” explained Amy “I got it from Love Lace Designs Bridal Boutique in Stockport and it was a gorgeous pre-loved dress that I had re-designed by their dress maker Cupids Treasure. The lace top part was made totally bespoke and they had so many wonderful ideas on how to re-style the dress, I rate them so highly! My dress got so many compliments on the day.”
On their wedding day Amy and Sean got ready surrounded by their friends and family before heading down to St Mary’s Church in Bowdon for a stunning and personalised wedding ceremony.
“St Mary’s is such a beautiful church,” said Amy, “we were so pleased that one of my school friends Kieran who is a gospel choir singer, was a big part of the ceremony singing as I walked down the aisle and during the service. We had hymns like ‘Oh Happy Day’ and people were singing, dancing and clapping – it really was brilliant.”
“Quite a few of my family were taken aback how personalised the whole wedding ceremony was. It was really unique – they loved it,” explained Sean.
Welcoming the new Mr and Mrs to The Bowdon Room with cheers and confetti, the guests were able to enjoy drinks outside in grounds of The Bowdon Rooms – thanks to the sunny August weather.
Once the drinks had been enjoyed and the wedding party photos had been taken, the celebrations moved indoors for a sit-down wedding breakfast in our gorgeously decorated ballroom. The high ceilings had been strung with fairy lights and soft voile streamers to compliment the style of Amy’s subtle colour palette.
“When we saw The Bowdon Rooms ballroom all decorated and finished it was so amazing,” said Amy, “we had been there the night before setting things up and although I initially panicked when we had to go for our wedding rehearsal, it was so nice to leave everything in Karen’s capable hands. When they revealed the room the next day and we saw what what she had turned it into, plus all the added extras it was fantastic.”
“A lot of our guests commented on how lovely The Bowdon Rooms looked, I don’t think many people realised how beautiful the ballroom would look all dressed. It’s hard to know what a gorgeous room it is from the outside!”
“One other thing worth mentioning was something that Karen surprised us with.” added Sean, “We’re big fans of gin so we wanted quite a few gin bottles put behind the bar. Karen managed to source the gin, but she also gave us a present of a gin bar which we didn’t expect at all and was really special.”
“Our speeches ended up being a record length for The Bowdon Rooms!” explained Sean with amusement. “We had my Dad, Amy’s Dad, Amy’s twin sister, my best man and my speech… so by the time the speeches ended we had accidentally knocked all timings back, We were suddenly really worried but Karen and the whole Bowdon Rooms team were so brilliant and they didn’t panic at all. They just sorted everything out and made sure that we weren’t worried.”
Once the (extra long!) speeches had finished, an additional 60 evening guests joined the celebrations to dance the night away to the live music of New Power Soul Club. “So many people told us how much they loved the music,” added Sean “the acoustics in the ballroom were amazing too, the sound that was generated in the room was incredible.”
“We would give our whole wedding experience at The Bowdon Rooms ten out of ten.” finished Sean. “Everything was so personalised, there was excellent attention to detail and above all the team is so friendly – we really felt as if they were part of our day. Karen was fantastic throughout. Tas was brilliant as our toast master and you felt like they weren’t even working – they were just a lovely part of everything.”
What a beautiful and truly personalised wedding day which we were very proud to have hosted for this lovely couple… our warmest congratulations to the fabulous Amy and Sean!
