31 Jan A Nice Day For a Non-White Wedding
When planning their October wedding, Mary and Chris Piekarski decided to play devil’s advocate.
Instead of opting for a traditional celebration, the couple put on a magical Halloween party for their family and friends at The Bowdon Rooms.
With enchanting fairy lights and the bride in a bewitching black and teal outfit carrying an autumnal maple leaf bouquet, they created a mesmerising atmosphere that left their guests spellbound.
They added a pub quiz, pie and peas meal and plenty of pumpkins to the recipe and cast the perfect wedding day spell – just three days before Halloween itself.
Mary, who has performed at The Bowdon Rooms and knows it well, said: “The day made us feel magical! It was perfect! We’ve had so many guests commenting that it was the best wedding they’ve been to.”
When their hunt began for the ideal venue, they’d been put off by set packages. They wanted somewhere where they could let their imaginations run free.
They visited The Bowdon Rooms and immediately got goose bumps. It ticked every box and they were soon bubbling with excitement about their big day with a difference.
“Our real must-have was to have a wedding that was not traditional,” explains Mary. “We didn’t want a white wedding and really wanted it to feel like a family party. The autumnal/Halloween feel was created perfectly by using black linen, fairy lights and pumpkins.
“We knew after our first meeting that we wanted to have our wedding at The Bowdon Rooms. We were just blown away by how much freedom was allowed with the planning.
“Karen immediately encouraged us to do things the way we wanted. She helped us with every aspect of the wedding and we felt like she was always there to answer any questions we had.
“She accommodated everything we asked for including the food, the non-traditional style, the party feel, the music and the decorations.”
Mary and Chris said their I Dos in our beautiful ballroom which was festooned with lights and warm autumnal garlands of ribbons and brown, orange and green acer leaves. The lights were kept low to add to the spine-tingling atmosphere.
A hearty pie and peas wedding breakfast was served on tables festooned with more burnished leaves, pumpkins and rich burgundy and orange tableware.
Dessert was a magnificent cheese tower decorated with luscious fruits including pomegranates, blackberries and peaches. Guests could also choose from a mouth-watering array of home-made cakes, including gin and tonic drizzle, carrot, and coffee and walnut.
The party later moved into our swinging music venue The Cinnamon Club. House regulars Dominic Halpin and The Honey Bs got the guests grooving with their mix of swing, rock and roll, and crooner classics.
Mary said: “Chris has been with me to a few gigs there before, so we already knew it as a great music venue. We know Dom and the band personally so knew they’d be brilliant. We highly recommend them to anyone looking for a wedding band!”
During the evening entertainment, Mary and Chris laid on a pub quiz, a favourite with their family, that went down a storm. Our bar staff were dressed to suit the mood in black shirts and orange ties – no opportunity to add to the autumnal atmosphere was missed.
The Bowdon Rooms arranged everything for Mary and Chris, meaning they didn’t have to use any external suppliers – a truly bespoke service that we pride ourselves on.
For Mary, everything went perfectly to plan: “We’ve had comments about how amazing the pie and peas was, how great the band were, how beautiful the rooms were. A lot of guests were impressed by how personal the wedding had been made, and that it reflected our personalities. Everyone loved that we’d been allowed to have a mini pub quiz, seeing as our families are into pub quizzes!
“Everything was personal, friendly and perfect for what we wanted in a wedding. We wouldn’t have changed a thing.
“We can’t thank you enough. It was honestly absolutely perfect and from day one we’ve been in awe that you’ve let us customise so much about the day when other venues have been very strict about what their weddings had to be like. Thank you!”
Everyone at The Bowdon Rooms share their best wishes with Mary and Chris as they embark on married life. May they be happy long into their autumn years.
